Eligibility for J-1 Intern Category:
To qualify as a J-1 Intern, an applicant must meet one of the following criteria:

Be currently enrolled in a degree- or certificate-granting post-secondary academic institution outside the United States; or
-
Have graduated from such an institution within 12 months before the start date of the exchange visitor program.

Eligibility for J-1 Trainee Category:

To qualify as a J-1 Trainee, an applicant must meet one of the following criteria:

Hold a degree or professional certificate from a post-secondary academic institution outside the United States, along with at least one year of related work experience in their occupational field abroad; or
-
Possess a minimum of five years of work experience outside the United States in the same occupational field in which they are seeking training.
